A shocking incident has emerged in Maharashtra regarding the digital registration of births and deaths. The Maharashtra government has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) after massive irregularities were discovered in a village with a population of just 1,300, but nearly 27,000 birth and death certificates were issued. This is a very strange case which has come to light from the Shendursani Gram Panchayat in Jalgaon district, Maharashtra. The village has a total population of only 1,300, yet nearly 27,000 birth and death certificates have been issued. Following this revelation, the government has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the matter.
It is suspected that fraud has happened through CRS.
According to officials, the Shendurasni Gram Panchayat has a total population of approximately 1,300, but the number of birth and death records obtained through the Civil Registration System (CRS) exceeds 27,000. This figure clearly does not match the village's population and raises the possibility of misuse, tampering, or fraudulent use of the digital system. A preliminary investigation has revealed that 27,398 "late birth registrations" were made in the village in just three months, which is highly suspicious.
The SIT will visit the village this week. A ground-level investigation will be conducted, examining the functioning of the Gram Panchayat, and identifying which system flaws were exploited. Technical investigations of IP logs and questioning of those who created the fake certificates will identify the entire network and its methods. The investigation aims not only to catch the culprits but also to establish strict guidelines and corrective measures to prevent such irregularities in the future. The government maintains that the digital registration system's credibility is essential and the public's safety is protected.
A criminal case has been registered at the Yavatmal city police station under sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act. The investigation was currently handled by the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO). Given the seriousness of the matter, the Home Department has now transferred the investigation to a Special Investigation Team (SIT). This team will operate under the supervision of the Additional Director General of Police (ADG), Maharashtra Cyber. The SIT also includes the Deputy Director of Health Services and the District Health Officer.
