Ganderbal , Feb 12:
While modern garments are becoming popular across the world, in Kashmir, the traditional pheran continues to remain the first choice for people during the winter season as it helps them stay warm in extreme cold conditions.
The Kashmiri pheran is a traditional long and loose garment worn by people across the Valley, especially during winter. It is usually made of wool for winter use and lighter fabric for summer. The pheran is worn by both men and women and often features traditional embroidery such as Aari, Sozni, and Tilla work, making it both culturally rich and practical. People also use a kangri (a small fire pot) inside the pheran to keep themselves warm during harsh winters.
One of the tailor said that he has been making pherans for the last 40 years. He said people of all age groups, from children to the elderly, wear pherans as it is an important part of Kashmiri culture. He added that they receive many orders every winter as people love wearing pherans and prefer different modern designs.
A local resident said that the pheran holds prime importance in Kashmir and is a necessity during winters. He said that pherans are now also being made in modern styles and designs to suit changing trends.
Another resident said that many people’s livelihoods are associated with pheran making and embroidery work. He expressed happiness that Kashmiri pherans are now being sold in international markets, which is helping promote Kashmiri art and culture and giving it global recognition.
