The grand opening ceremony, held amidst the pristine slopes of Gulmarg, reflected the spirit of athletic excellence, youth empowerment, and national integration. Organised under the flagship Khelo India Winter Games, the event is part of the Government of India’s larger Khelo India mission aimed at strengthening grassroots talent and building world-class sporting infrastructure. The snow sports phase, scheduled from February 23 to 26, 2026, follows the successful ice sports leg held earlier in Leh, reinforcing the Himalayan region’s pivotal role in the country’s winter sports ecosystem. Accompanied by Sports Minister Satish Sharma and senior officials from the J&K administration and Sports Council, the Lieutenant Governor lauded the enthusiasm of the athletes and the tireless efforts of organisers. Over 339 athletes, along with coaches and delegates, are participating in the Gulmarg leg, competing across four major snow disciplines—Alpine Skiing, Snowboarding, Nordic Skiing, and Ski Mountaineering. The competitions are being hosted at world-renowned venues including Kangdoori Phase 1 slopes and the iconic Gulmarg ski stretches, reaffirming Gulmarg as one of Asia’s premier skiing destinations. The Indian Army, defending champions from previous editions, returns with strong representation, promising high-intensity contests and sporting excellence. The inauguration underscores Jammu & Kashmir’s transformation into a hub for winter sports development and international-standard infrastructure. With live broadcasts on DD Sports and nationwide attention on the Valley’s snow-clad arenas, the Games symbolize aspiration, resilience, and opportunity for young athletes aiming to shine on national and global platforms.
