In Senthamangalam village near Ulundurpet, Kallakurichi district in Tamilnadu, a man named Anand has been rearing more than 20 goats and is engaged in the profession of grazing goats and cattle. Recently, one of his goats gave birth to two kids. While one of them looked like a normal goat kid, the second one was born with a human-like face and thick fur resembling that of a bear, giving it an unusual appearance. This strange sight attracted villagers, who came in large numbers out of curiosity to see it. Some who saw it began to spread fear, saying that the birth of such oddly shaped goat kids could be a sign of an impending misfortune. This created panic among the villagers. News of the goat kid with a human-like face spread like wildfire throughout the surrounding areas. Soon, large crowds gathered at Anand’s house to witness the unusual animal, watching it with surprise and amazement. This is not the first time goats have been born with a human-like appearance. In various places, goats, cows, and other livestock have occasionally given birth to such oddly formed young. Villagers often consider these births rare and extraordinary. Some even believe they are a sign that disaster is about to occur. Recently, in Bardhaman district of West Bengal, a deformed calf was born. The calf survived for only four months, but locals worshipped it fervently, falling at its feet. Similarly, such deformed animals are sometimes seen as symbols of divinity. On the other hand, many villagers believe that when goats or cows give birth to young with such strange appearances, it signals that something bad is about to happen. In most cases, animals born with such deformities do not survive, and many are stillborn. In this instance too, the goat kid with the human-like face was born dead. However, due to the widespread superstitious belief that such deformities can bring misfortune, many residents of Senthamangalam are now living in fear.
