Bangladesh's political and judicial system has once again found itself at the center of a major controversy. The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has indicted 17 individuals, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, on charges of crimes against humanity related to alleged enforced disappearances during the Awami League regime. This decision has further exacerbated the political instability and legal conflict already plaguing Bangladesh. The three-member ICT bench passed the order after reading out four charges. The accused include Sheikh Hasina's former Defense and Security Advisor, Major General (Retired) Tariq Ahmed Siddique, 11 army officers, and a former Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) officer. The 10 RAB officers who appeared during the proceedings pleaded not guilty and expressed hope for justice. According to the prosecution, at least 14 people were illegally detained and tortured between 2016 and 2024. The tribunal has fixed January 21 as the date for the opening arguments in the case.
