The Kumbh Mela, currently being held at Thirunavaya until February 3rd is significant for several reasons. This Magha Mahotsavam on the banks of the Nila River coincides with the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj. Let us delve into the history and mythology behind Kerala's Kumbh Mela. All the holy rivers of India met at the banks of the Nila River during Lord Brahma's sacrifice. There is a belief that the essence of these holy rivers stays in the Bharathapuzha during the month of Magha, the same month the Yajna was held with the participation of the Saptarishis and gods. The month of Magha is observed with the faith that these divine beings and sages visit the river every year during this time. Initially, spiritual leaders (Dharmacharyas) and holy saints led the rituals (Yaga). Later, when the need for a ruler for Kerala arose, the selection process took place here. This tradition was brought to an end by the British 270 years ago. History states that the Maha Magha festival (Mamankam), believed to have first been held under the priesthood of Brihaspati, was subsequently led by various rulers, ranging from the Perumals to the Zamorins (Samoothirippadu), at different stages. This land was formerly called Thapasannur and Thapanur. Following the arrival of the Navamukunda Temple, it became a place of significance for Goddess Rajarajeshwari. The three temples here form a triangle, serving as the traditional venue for sacred Yagas. At the heart of this triangle is the presence of Rajarajeshwari, signifying the sacrificial land of Lord Brahma. Historically, the Magha festival was celebrated here, and the tradition continues at the same location this year. The Magha Mahotsavam in Kerala is being led by the Juna Akhada—the same order of Naga Sadhus who conduct the Kumbh Mela in Prayag. Magha Mahotsavam started in Thirunavaya during the month of Magha. It is believed that all the sacred rivers of India are present in the Nila River at this time. The Magha Festival has started at Thirunavaya. It is believed that during the month of Magha, all the holy rivers of India converge in the Nila River. He remarked that we should be proud of our traditions and follow Sanatana Dharma.
