Anantnag, Feb 23: A series of mysterious fish deaths have been reported over the past few days in the Sher Bagh area of Anantnag, triggering concern among local residents. According to locals, rising pollution levels in the water body may be the primary cause behind the incident. Residents alleged that waste disposal and contamination of the spring have been ongoing issues, which could have adversely affected aquatic life. Taking cognizance of the matter, Fisheries Department Project Officer Mohammad Yaseen visited the site to assess the situation. During the inspection, medicines were added to the water, and a cleanliness drive was carried out in and around the spring to prevent further damage. Speaking to the media, Yaseen said that the department has initiated an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the fish deaths. He informed that water samples are being collected and sent for laboratory analysis. He further stated that the Sher Bagh spring passes through an internal drain where a latrine outlet merges, and some people also dump rice, lentils, plastic, and other waste into the water, which may have contributed to the pollution. The officer appealed to the public to avoid throwing garbage or waste into the spring and other water bodies and urged residents to cooperate with authorities in safeguarding the environment and protecting aquatic life.
