Historic Moment at Srisailam: Chenchu Tribals Get Sparsha Darshan of Lord Mallikarjuna.
Andhra Pradesh: According to long-held tribal beliefs, the Chenchu tribes living in the Srisailam forests consider Lord Mallikarjuna (Lord Shiva) as their son-in-law and have shared an inseparable bond with the sacred shrine for centuries.
In a historic and deeply emotional development, a long-cherished dream of the Chenchu tribal community came true on the auspicious occasion of Vaikunta Ekadasi, when the Sri Bhramaramba Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple Trust Board facilitated Sparsha Darshan (touching the deity) of Lord Mallikarjuna for the tribals residing in the forest areas surrounding the Srisailam hill shrine.
For generations, the Chenchus had access only to Alankara Darshan of the presiding deities. “This is the first time in our lives that we were blessed to touch Lord Mallikarjuna Swamy,” said members of the tribal community, describing the moment as divine and unforgettable.
Mr. Nageshwar Rao, a senior citizen, welcomed the initiative and termed it a historic decision.
“I personally thank the Temple Trust Board. This was a long-standing dream of the tribals. I have personally witnessed how many tribals were converted to other religions in the past. This decision restores their faith, dignity, and spiritual connection,” he said.
Speaking to Zee Media,
Temple Trust Board Chairman Mr. Ramesh Naidu said the initiative was aimed at reviving ancient traditions.
“In earlier times, the Chenchu tribal people were the primary caretakers of Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple. It is our responsibility to bring them back to the temple. This is nothing short of Lord Shiva’s miracle,” he said.
He further explained that on Vaikunta Ekadasi, the Chenchus were welcomed with full honours. “They arrived at the temple in a traditional procession, performing tribal dances to the beats of drums at the Sri Umaramalingeswara Swamy Temple, where I had the privilege of personally welcoming them,” the Chairman added.
The Chenchu devotees were later taken inside the temple and provided Sparsha Darshan of Lord Mallikarjuna Swamy, followed by darshan of Goddess Bhramaramba. The Trust Board Chairman and Executive Officer later shared Annaprasadam with the Chenchu devotees.
The Chairman revealed that during his visit to the tribal hamlets, locals requested that Sparsha Darshan be facilitated for the community. The proposal was discussed in the Trust Board meeting, following which a decision was taken to institutionalize the initiative.
“We have launched this initiative on the auspicious Vaikunta Ekadasi. Going forward, the Chenchu tribals will be provided VVIP Darshan every Monday and on the last Tuesday of every month. Sarees and dhotis offered by devotees will also be presented to them as a mark of temple respect,” Mr. Naidu said.
Meanwhile, concerns have been raised over forced religious conversions in the Srisailam region, where 22 tribal hamlets fall under Andhra Pradesh and 16 under Telangana. Temple authorities believe this historic initiative will bring a positive and lasting transformation in the lives of the Chenchu tribals and help preserve their cultural and spiritual heritage.
