VO: Amid heightened security, uneasy calm prevailed in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir on the fifth consecutive day of restrictions following the arrest of Aam Aadmi Party MLA Mehraj Malik under the Public Safety Act (PSA). Internet and Wi-Fi services also remained suspended as a precautionary measure.
Authorities said several people were detained after violent clashes earlier this week between security forces and protesters demanding Malik’s release. The MLA, arrested for disturbing public order, has been lodged in Kathua jail.
To restore peace, the administration and Police led by ADC Bhaderwah Sunil Kumar Bhutiyal held a series of meetings with community leaders, including members of Anjuman-e-Islamia Bhaderwah, Sanatan Dharam Sabha, senior citizens, and social activists. Similar initiatives were taken in Doda, where IGP and DIG chaired joint peace meetings.
Following the talks, relaxation in restrictions was announced: from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Bhaderwah and from 12 noon to 6 p.m. in Doda. Shops reopened during the relaxation hours, with people stepping out to buy essentials.
DIG Shridhar Patil assured that the situation is “by and large under control” and appealed to residents of Chenab Valley to cooperate with authorities.
Security has been further tightened across Doda town, Bhaderwah, Gandoh, and Thathri. Concertina wires have been placed near key government offices and police patrols intensified, with announcements urging people to remain indoors.
Officials confirmed that protests had broken out on Monday and Wednesday, forcing security forces to resort to baton charges in several areas. Eight policemen, including a deputy superintendent of police and a station house officer, were injured in the clashes.
Though normalcy has begun to return in Bhaderwah, prohibitory orders remain in force across the district. The Chief Education Officer has ordered all schools closed until Sunday, while business establishments remain shut.
