Gurez Residents Demand Helicopter Service After Fresh Snowfall Cuts Off Valley. Residents of Gurez Valley in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district have demanded the immediate resumption of helicopter services after fresh snowfall once again cut off the remote region from the rest of the Valley, triggering fears of prolonged isolation and supply shortages. Although authorities reopened the 86-kilometre Bandipora–Gurez road on a precautionary basis, locals say the road remains highly unsafe due to slippery conditions, frequent avalanches, and black ice, making travel extremely difficult for essential traffic. “The road may be officially open, but in reality it is not safe. Even tracked vehicles are struggling to move, and ordinary passengers are at risk,” said Mohd Hamza, a local resident of Gurez. He added that patients, students, and those requiring urgent supplies are the worst affected. Residents said that the absence of an aerial alternative during winter leaves the valley vulnerable, particularly during medical emergencies. They urged the administration to restore helicopter services, which have previously been used during harsh winters to transport patients, ration supplies, and government officials. Officials have maintained that road connectivity is being monitored and clearance operations are underway. However, locals argue that reliance on a single road in extreme weather conditions is insufficient for a region that remains snowbound for months.
