Kishtwar,
Despite freezing conditions, the Indian Army has intensified counter-terrorism operations across the hilly districts of Kishtwar and Doda in Jammu and Kashmir amid snow in higher reaches, as security forces continue a week-long operation to pin down Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists, including Foreigner commander Saifullah and his aide Adil, official sources said. Both Saifullah and Adil, each carrying a reward of ₹10 lakh, are believed to be hiding in the dense forests and rugged hills of Kishtwar. The ongoing operation is also focused on neutralising other terrorist elements operating in the adjoining hill areas of Doda. The anti-terror drive was initially launched from villages in the Chatroo subdivision of Kishtwar, where troops carried out extensive searches and area domination exercises. The operation in Chatroo has been underway for the past one week. Meanwhile, another major operation is currently in progress in Keshwan area of Kishtwar, located around 35 kilometres from the district headquarters. Troops also continued combing operations in Seojdhar area of Doda district. The operation in Keshwan was launched on Saturday and is expected to continue for more days. Sources said that more than 2,000 troops have been deployed across multiple locations to track down the terrorists. Several local villagers, familiar with the terrain, have also come forward to assist the security forces by sharing vital inputs and helping in navigation through the difficult mountainous region. In a separate but parallel operation, the Army has intensified surveillance in Kishtwar’s Padder subdivision, an area known to be a stronghold of Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist commander Jahingeer Saroori. Two other local terrorists, identified as Muddasir and Riaz—each carrying a reward of ₹10 lakh—are also believed to be operating in the region. Despite freezing temperatures and treacherous terrain, the Army has stepped up its counter-terrorism efforts. Traditionally, the onset of the 40-day ‘Chillai Kalan’—the harshest winter phase from December 21 to January 31—results in a temporary lull in terrorist activities due to heavy snowfall and closure of communication routes. However, defence sources said this winter marks a decisive shift in operational strategy. Instead of scaling down, the Army has adopted a proactive winter posture by establishing temporary bases and surveillance posts deep inside snow-bound areas to sustain pressure on terrorist hideouts. Operating in sub-zero temperatures and low-visibility conditions, Army patrols are regularly traversing high-altitude ridgelines, valleys and forested zones to deny terrorists any safe haven. Experts believe this shift reflects an evolution in counter-terrorism tactics, underscoring the Army’s adaptability and resolve to maintain operational momentum regardless of weather or terrain challenges.
