Local residents who spoke to Salaam tv, welcomed the move and said that the move would play a crucial role in reviving and preserving the fast-disappearing indigenous language and strengthening the cultural identity of the region. Locals said the absence of written textbooks for decades had pushed Shina to the margins, particularly among the younger generation, which increasingly shifted to Urdu and Kashmiri for education and daily communication. They believe the formal introduction of Shina at the primary level will help children learn to read and write in their mother tongue and reconnect with their linguistic roots from an early age. Welcoming the decision of JKBOSE to include Shina in primary-level textbooks, residents said the initiative would help safeguard the cultural heritage of Gurez Valley. Mohd Hamza, a resident of the area, said the language had been gradually fading due to the lack of textbooks, limited institutional support, and weak intergenerational transmission. “This step will keep our identity alive and help younger generations reconnect with their mother tongue,” he said. Hamza pointed out that Shina is widely spoken in Gilgit-Baltistan and parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan, where textbooks and literature in the language already exist. “Ironically, in Gurez Valley, where Shina is native there were no textbooks taught in schools until now.Our children were growing up without learning to read or write their own language,” he said. According to the figures, around 50000 people in Gurez Valley and Drass speak Shina, making it one of the most significant linguistic communities in the region. However, residents said that due to the lack of formal education in Shina, many young people were slowly forgetting the language or using it only in limited household conversations.
