Rail authorities, in coordination with the Jammu and Kashmir administration, have started a special train service from Katra to Srinagar for two days to facilitate passengers amid inclement weather and the closure of the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) due to heavy snowfall and landslides. The initiative commenced on January 27 and continued till January 28. Tourists and other travelers at Banihal Railway Station appreciated the move, describing it as a timely and welcome measure that provides a valuable alternative to reach Kashmir and enjoy the snowfall amid adverse weather conditions. Rail travel is considered safer than road transport during snowfall as highways often become slippery and risky. The service halted at various stations en route before proceeding to Srinagar, providing relief to stranded passengers and ensuring connectivity in the region despite vehicular suspension on NH-44.
