A barbaric incident carried out in a medieval manner with the intent to murder a businessman over just 50,000 taka and a mobile phone has occurred in Damudya Upazila of Shariatpur district. The assailants first stabbed the businessman in the abdomen with a sharp knife, pulling out his intestines, and then poured petrol over his body and set him on fire to ensure his death.\nThe horrific incident took place around 9:00 PM on Tuesday night near the Keherbhanga Market area of Koneshwar Union in the upazila. The businessman, who is now fighting for his life, has been identified as Khokon Das. He is a well-known pharmacy owner and bKash–Nagad mobile financial service agent in the local market.\nAccording to eyewitnesses and local sources, as usual, Khokon Das closed his shop on Tuesday night and set off for home with the day’s earnings. He had no idea that death was lurking just near his home. As he reached close to the boundary of his house, a group of three organized criminals stopped him.\nBefore he could understand what was happening, the attackers stabbed him in the abdomen with a sharp knife. Eyewitnesses said the attack was so brutal that his intestines came out of his body. When he collapsed on the ground in agony, the attackers did not stop there. They poured petrol they had brought with them over his body and set him on fire. Within moments, raging flames engulfed his face and body.\nRelatives of Khokon Das and local residents believe the attack was carried out mainly to rob him of his business earnings. During the attack, the assailants snatched 50,000 taka in cash from his pocket along with his mobile phone and quickly fled the scene. However, there are also rumors among locals about possible prior enmity or other motives behind the attack.\nHearing Khokon Das’s screams as he lay with severe burn injuries and deep abdominal wounds, nearby people rushed to the scene. Locals rescued him and first took him to Damudya Upazila Health Complex. The on-duty doctors were shocked after seeing his condition. Due to the deep abdominal injury and severe burns to a large part of his body, including the respiratory tract, they advised immediate transfer to the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka or another advanced hospital. He is currently in critical condition.\nThis gruesome incident in Koneshwar Union previously known as a peaceful area has spread extreme fear among the general public. Business owners have expressed serious concerns about their safety. Shortly after the incident, locals erupted in anger and demanded the immediate identification and exemplary punishment of those involved in this brutal attack.\nA local resident said, “Trying to kill someone by burning their body like this is not something a human being can do these are animals. We demand that the administration arrest the culprits within 24 hours.”\nPolice have visited the scene, and it has been reported that preparations are underway to conduct operations to arrest those involved in the incident.
