VO: Restrictions remained in force for the second consecutive day across Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district on Thursday amid apprehensions of protests by supporters of MLA Mehraj Malik, who has been booked under the Public Safety Act (PSA) and lodged in Kathua Jail. Meanwhile residents of Bhaderwah demand restoration of internet services as study of children is suffering.
The arrest of the sitting legislator sparked widespread protests in Doda town and his native village earlier this week, prompting the administration to impose restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) across the district. Since the enforcement of restrictions on Wednesday, no fresh protests have been reported.
With the situation showing signs of improvement, authorities on Thursday allowed limited relaxation in Bhaderwah, where shops dealing in essential services were permitted to open. However, in the rest of the district, all educational institutions, business establishments, and shops—except medical stores—remained closed.
Security personnel continue to maintain a heavy presence in Doda, Thathri, and Gandoh, with police vehicles making repeated announcements on loudspeakers, urging residents to stay indoors and cooperate with authorities. Mobile internet and Wi-Fi services remain suspended for the third consecutive day.
Meanwhile, locals in Bhaderwah have demanded restoration of internet services, citing normalcy in the area. Advocate Mohd Majid Malik said, “Snapping of internet facility is just an abuse of power. In absence of internet, our children are suffering a lot. The work of business community and government offices is also suffering in digital India.”
Officials said the restrictions will remain in place until further orders to ensure peace and prevent any law and order situation.
