Encroachers, led by a woman named Hafeez Begum, had built unlawful structures on this land. A municipal inquiry confirmed these were indeed illegal. For decades, even though encroachers had occupied the land, the Endowments Department turned a blind eye. Appeals to remove these encroachments and protect the temple properties were ignored. When no response came, the democratic path of protest was taken by Petitioner Yamuna Pathak A day long hunger strike was organized, which finally stirred the administration into action. Following the protest, senior officials including the Additional Commissioner, Assistant Commissioner, and Deputy Commissioners of the Endowments Department responded and promised swift justice. Only then was the hunger strike withdrawn by Yamuna Pathak. But the struggle didn’t stop there. Door to door campaigns, padayatras, Vishnu Sahasranama recitations, and relentless social media campaigns united Hindu devotees and amplified the movement. Eventually, authorities responded. With the cooperation of the police, GHMC, revenue, and endowment officials, a joint survey was conducted, leading to the seizure of two illegally constructed houses and two shops on temple land. This stands as a rare moment where dharma triumphed over adharma. The fight to fully reclaim the 4,224 sq. yards of temple land from encroachers is still ongoing, with some pending work yet to be completed.
