Tirupati: After the laddu controversy and the Parakamani case, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has been rocked by yet another major scandal. According to the TTD Board, polyester dupattas were supplied for nearly a decade from 2015 to 2025 in the name of “pure mulberry silk.” These dupattas, given to lakhs of donors and VIP devotees during Vedaseervachana, are now under scrutiny due to doubts raised over their quality. Vigilance Report Brings the Truth to Light Based on the instructions of TTD Chairman B.R. Naidu, the Vigilance & Security Department collected samples from the existing stock and sent them for testing. As per tender conditions, the dupattas must: Be woven with 100% pure mulberry silk Use 20/22 denier silk yarn Carry “Om Namo Venkatesaya” in both Sanskrit and Telugu Feature Shankha, Chakra and Namam symbols Adhere to specific size, weight and border design norms However, samples tested at the Central Silk Board laboratories in Bengaluru and Dharmavaram revealed that all items were made of polyester. The Vigilance team also confirmed that the mandatory silk hologram was missing. One Company Supplied for 10 Years ₹54.95 Crore Worth Material According to the Vigilance findings, the dupattas were supplied by a single firm VRS Exports, based in Nagari. This company, along with its allied units, supplied textiles worth ₹54.95 crore to the TTD between 2015 and 2025. The report also states that the same company recently received a fresh contract for 15,000 dupattas. Case Handed Over to ACB In an emergency meeting, the TTD Board decided to: Hand over the entire scam to the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Initiate criminal proceedings against all those involved Review the tendering process for loopholes and irregularities.
