Police have so far arrested five people in the incident. Walayar police said that an investigation into the incident is underway and more arrests will be made. The tragic incident took place at 3 pm on Wednesday.
Ramanarayanan, a native of Chhattisgarh, arrived in Palakkad a week ago in search of a job at Kanchikode Kinfra. Since it was an unfamiliar place, he got lost and ended up in Attapallam in Walayar. Ramnarayanan had some mental problems after his wife left him three years ago. The first people who met Ramnarayanan were the job-secured workers in Attapallam. Then, the youths nearby were informed. Later, a group of local residents gathered and detained Ramnarayanan. They accused him of being a thief and beat him up. The police arrived and shifted Ramanarayanan, who was in a critical condition, to the Palakkad District Hospital, but he died. The locals replied that they thought he was a thief when they saw him.
Five people from Attapallam have been arrested in the case. Those arrested are Ananthan (55) and K Bibin (30), natives of East Attapallam, A Anu (38), natives of Kallangad, and C Prasad (34) and C Murali (38), natives of Mahalikkad. They were arrested around midnight on Thursday. The five were accused of assaulting a guest worker. On Wednesday evening at 6 pm, a gang attacked Ramanarayan Bhaiyar (31), a native of Chhattisgarh, in eastern Attapallath, suspecting him of being a thief. Bhaiyar, who was beaten up, collapsed and vomited blood. He was taken to the Palakkad District Hospital, but died.
