Crackdown in Beherampur Slum: Illegal Migrants with master mind Flee as Police Seize Arms and Fake IDs Acting on specific directives from the Odisha state government to intensify action against illegal Bangladeshi migrants along the coastal belt, Jagatsinghpur district police launched a major raid in the Beherampur slum under Sadar Police Station limits on Monday, 17 November 2025. The pre-dawn operation, involving multiple teams, targeted suspicious habitats where a cluster of illegal settlers had reportedly been living for years. Residents and intelligence inputs had repeatedly flagged the presence of undocumented foreigners engaged in menial jobs while allegedly maintaining links with cross-border networks. During the six-hour combing operation, police recovered a cache of dangerous weapons: several sharpened dahs (long knives), two country-made firearms, and live bullets. Four suspected Bangladeshi nationals were arrested on the spot after they failed to produce any valid identity or travel documents. Ten others, however, managed to melt away into nearby marshes and fishing hamlets before the cordon could be fully tightened. Sources within the police revealed that the group was being orchestrated by one Sikandar Alam, popularly known as “Siku”, who is believed to be the kingpin behind arranging settlements, rented rooms, and forged Indian identity documents for illegal entrants. A bundle of suspected fake Aadhaar cards, voter IDs, and ration cards bearing photographs of the arrested individuals was seized from a tin-roofed shack allegedly used by Siku as an office. In a dramatic turn, the raiding team also found a bag abandoned in haste containing Sikandar Alam’s own passport, several SIM cards, and handwritten ledgers listing names, dates of “entry”, and amounts paid for documentation and accommodation. Simultaneously, civic authorities backed by police bulldozed illegal structures that had mushroomed on government land. Local residents, many of whom had long complained about rising crime and pressure on resources, watched silently as JCB machines razed the shanties. To prevent any backlash or communal flare-up, five platoons of armed police have been deployed in and around Beherampur and adjoining Kujang and Paradeep areas. Barricades have gone up at key entry points, and night patrolling has been intensified. Speaking to reporters outside Sadar Police Station, Superintendent of Police Ankit Verma confirmed that a special team headed by an Additional SP has been constituted to trace Sikandar Alam, who is believed to have fled towards Paradip port or West Bengal. “We are examining all call records, bank transactions, and the forged documents seized. A Look Out Circular is ready and will be issued within hours if required. No one involved in sheltering or aiding illegal infiltration will be spared,” the SP asserted.
