BBMP Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao Responds to Garbage Dumping Complaints
Bengaluru: Addressing the issue of residents dumping garbage in front of their houses, BBMP Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao said that solid waste management officials are actively spreading awareness among the public, and this effort has received positive feedback from citizens.
“We have identified black spots and are continuously clearing them. Videos have also been taken of those dumping waste illegally, and fines are being imposed,” he said.
Responding to complaints that garbage collection autos are not arriving regularly, Rao clarified, “We have deployed over 100 additional autos. Such issues are not widespread — in case of specific complaints, action will be taken immediately. But people should not throw garbage on the streets. Missing one day’s collection doesn’t mean you can dump waste on the road — you can always dispose of it the next day.”
He added that the BBMP is currently focusing on penalising violators and creating public awareness about responsible waste disposal.
Garbage Awareness Drive Sparks Fear Among Bengaluru Residents
Bengaluru citizens have begun to fear the “garbage awareness drive” launched by the BBMP (Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Agency). Residents are anxious after reports that BBMP staff have started dumping garbage in front of houses belonging to those who litter public spaces.
On Thursday, not a single pile of garbage was seen on the streets — a rare sight in the city. Many residents were seen waiting for garbage collection autos, wary of facing penalties.
The BBMP’s strict action follows widespread embarrassment caused by Bengaluru’s garbage crisis, which recently made national and international headlines. Determined to restore the city’s image, BBMP officials have intensified their crackdown.
On Wednesday alone, garbage was dumped in front of 218 houses, and fines totaling ₹2.8 lakh were collected. Under the new initiative, anyone caught throwing garbage in public places will face a ₹1,000 fine, and the waste will be placed back in front of their house as a warning.
