Fasting hours during Ramadan is very significant for Muslims around the globe, where they abstain from food, drink, and other physical needs from dawn until sunset. While the primary purpose of fasting in Ramadan is spiritual, research suggests that it may also offer a range of health benefits when practiced mindfully.
One of the most notable benefits of Ramadan fasting is improved metabolic health. During fasting hours, the body shifts from using glucose as its primary energy source to burning stored fat. This metabolic switch can promote fat loss and improve insulin sensitivity, helping regulate blood sugar levels.
In an exclusive interaction with Salaam TV, Medical Superintendent of District Hospital Ganderbal, Dr. Farah Shafi, issued a health advisory for patients suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure, heart ailments, and other medical conditions during the holy month of Ramadan.
Dr. Farah Shafi advised patients to consult their doctors before observing fasts and strictly follow prescribed medical guidance. She urged them to take their medicines on time as advised by their physicians and avoid excessive consumption of oily, fried, and salty foods during Sehri and Iftar.
She further emphasized the importance of a balanced diet, adequate intake of fruits and vegetables, and maintaining proper hydration during non-fasting hours. Dr. Shafi also cautioned patients to immediately seek medical attention if they experience dizziness, weakness, fluctuations in blood sugar levels, or any unusual symptoms while fasting.
