MLA Javid Hassan Baigh Baramulla has strongly condemned the cowardly assassination attempt on Dr. Farooq Abdullah, President of Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, and former Member of Parliament. He said the shocking news has left us all shell-shocked and deeply disturbed. An attack on such a towering political personality is not merely an attack on an individual; it is an assault on democracy, public life, and the spirit of political dialogue in our region. While we thank the Almighty for His mercy and protection that Dr. Farooq Abdullah remained safe, and that Mr. Surinder Kumar Choudhary Dy. CM and Mr. Nasir Aslam Wani Political advisor to CM also remained unharmed, the incident raises extremely serious questions about security arrangements. If a leader of the stature of Dr. Farooq Abdullah, who is provided Z+ Security Category, can face such a grave security breach, then it becomes imperative to ask: where was the much-talked-about three-layer security protection? Such a lapse cannot be brushed aside yet we thank the inner layer of security for foiling the life bid. The people deserve answers about how an individual managed to enter a function carrying a deadly weapon and how the security cordon was compromised. The truth must be brought out through a thorough, transparent, and time-bound investigation. Accountability must be fixed. When a person protected under the highest security category can be exposed to danger, the question naturally arises — if he is not safe, then who is? The accused, Kamal Singh Jamal, who dared to attempt such a heinous act against one of the tallest leaders of Jammu and Kashmir, must be dealt with firmly and strictly under the law. Such an act cannot be treated as an ordinary crime. For the sake of deterrence and to send a strong message that no one can threaten democratic leadership with impunity, stringent legal provisions including the Public Safety Act should be invoked against him. The law must take its toughest course so that justice is not only done but clearly seen to be done. MLA Javid Hassan Baigh further said let there be no attempt to communalise the issue. An act of violence must be seen purely as a criminal and anti-democratic act, and the law must take its strictest course against the perpetrator. Anyone who dares to raise a weapon against a senior leader and former Chief Minister of the region must face the severest punishment under the law. This attack is not an isolated episode; it is a dangerous warning for every political voice that speaks for Jammu and Kashmir. It is an attack on democracy, on the freedom of political expression, and on the safety of public representatives. Dr. Farooq Abdullah has always been known as one of the tallest and most accessible leaders of Jammu and Kashmir, a leader whose politics has been rooted in social connections and dialogue with the people. Such acts of violence cannot and must not intimidate those who stand for democratic values. Once again, we thank the Almighty for protecting Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Surinder Kumar Choudhary, and Nasir Aslam Wani, and we pray for their continued safety and good health. May such dark attempts never succeed in silencing the voices of democracy.
