Ahead of J&K Budget, Former MLA Bandipora Usman Majid seeks relief for poor, demands NLU Campus for Bandipora. As the government prepares to present its second budget in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, expectations are rising among residents who say they are still waiting for key election promises, including free electricity, subsidised gas cylinders and jobs, to translate into real relief on the ground. Former Bandipora MLA Usman Majid on Sunday said the upcoming budget must prioritise daily wagers and common people of Kashmir, who he said continue to suffer under unemployment, inflation and high utility costs. “This is the second budget in the Assembly, and people are still struggling. Promises of free electricity, gas cylinders and employment were made, but families are yet to feel any meaningful change,” Majid told reporters in Bandipora. He said rising power tariffs, expensive cooking gas and lack of stable work have pushed many households into financial distress, particularly those dependent on daily wages and seasonal labour. “The people of the Valley are suffering. A labourer worries every day about electricity bills, LPG prices and whether there will be work tomorrow,” he said. “The government must ensure this budget is friendly to daily wagers and the poor, not just on paper.” Majid urged the Omar Abdullah-led government to fulfil the commitments made during the elections, saying unemployed youth are bearing the brunt of the absence of job opportunities in the region. He also demanded the establishment of a National Law University campus in Bandipora, arguing that the district lacks any major higher education institution despite its growing student population. “Bandipora has no national-level institution. Our youth deserve access to quality legal education at home,” Majid said, urging local legislators to raise the issue in the Assembly and protest until a campus is sanctioned for the district.
