Hurriyat Chairman Mirwaiz Umer Farooq Criticizes Lack of Democracy, Freedom of Speech in Kashmir In a stark condemnation of the current political climate in Jammu and Kashmir, Hurriyat Chairman Mirwaiz Umer Farooq has voiced serious concerns regarding the erosion of democratic values and freedom of expression in the region. Speaking to reporters during a religious function in Budgam, Mirwaiz criticized both the central government and the local administration, led by Omar Abdullah, for their inability to address pressing public issues. Mirwaiz Umer said, “There is no visible democracy in Jammu and Kashmir. The government is imposing severe restrictions on freedom of expression, leaving the elected representatives powerless to act in the interest of the people.” He emphasized that even the elected government under Omar Abdullah seems ineffective, unable to deliver on critical matters affecting the populace. The Hurriyat leader expressed deep sorrow over the recent tragic events in Ladakh, where four lives were lost, highlighting the deteriorating situation in the region since the bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh in August 2019. He said that there has been a complete ban on freedom of expression, particularly targeting separatists and individuals who attempt to voice their opinions on pertinent issues. Mirwaiz lamented, “In Kashmir, expressing concerns about any issue—even something as fundamental as the Wakf bill—results in immediate repercussions from the administration and police. Religious leaders face undue restrictions, which is deeply unfortunate.” He urged the central government to reconsider its Kashmir policy and put an end to the prevailing atmosphere of intimidation and censorship. Drawing parallels with global situations, Mirwaiz suggested that the central govt should take lessons from the ongoing crises in Palestine and Gaza, emphasizing that such oppressive tactics will not yield positive outcomes. Reflecting on his own experiences, Mirwaiz revealed his uncertainty regarding his movements, stating, “I have no idea when I will be released from house arrest or when I will face restrictions again. For the past three Fridays, I have been barred from visiting Jamia Masjid in Srinagar, which exemplifies the absence of democracy in Kashmir.” Mirwayiz also express his concern on the situation in Palestine and said that any peace deal which didn’t protect interests of Palestine people is incomplete and will not trails any positive outcome.
