Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake via telephonic conversation and discussed the evolving situation in West Asia, with particular focus on disruptions affecting global energy security. Both leaders reviewed progress on key initiatives aimed at strengthening India-Sri Lanka energy cooperation and enhancing regional security. Modi shared details of the exchange on social media, noting discussions with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and the focus on disruptions affecting global energy security. They reaffirmed the deep-rooted ties and mutual resolve to navigate current geopolitical hurdles, emphasising that as close and trusted partners they would work together to address shared challenges. This outreach followed a strategic dialogue held earlier between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Sri Lankan counterpart Vijitha Herath, who noted discussions on the repercussions of the West Asia conflict and reaffirmed India's commitment to Neighbourhood First and Vision MAHASAGAR. The coordination with regional partners occurred alongside Modi’s telephonic conversation with US President Donald Trump, highlighting the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open for global energy security. Modi stated that he received a call from President Trump and had a useful exchange on the West Asia situation, adding that India supports de-escalation and restoration of peace at the earliest, and ensuring the Strait of Hormuz remains open and accessible. US envoy Sergio Gor confirmed the exchange, noting the focus on keeping the Strait of Hormuz open. This comes as President Trump signalled potential de-escalation in the US-Israel standoff with Iran, with productive talks with Tehran. Addressing Parliament, Modi stressed India’s proactive role in navigating the crisis through constant communication, noting that since the start of the war he has held two rounds of phone conversations with heads of state in West Asia and is in touch with Gulf countries, Iran, Israel, and the United States. He also highlighted that New Delhi is leveraging diplomatic capital to protect maritime and diaspora interests, emphasising that diplomacy aims for safe passage of India’s ships even in a war and that India prefers dialogue to resolve issues.
