The party confirmed in a short statement that the veteran leader passed away after battling multiple health issues. Khaleda Zia was born in 15 August, 1945 and is a prominent Bangladeshi politician, widow of former President Ziaur Rahman, who served as Bangladesh's first female Prime Minister in two terms (1991–1996, 2001–2006) and led the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) from 1984 until her death on December 30, 2025, becoming a key figure in restoring democracy against military rule. She became active after her husband's assassination, leading the BNP to victory in 1991, ending military rule, and serving as PM, focusing on economic reforms and education access. She was the First woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh, second in the Muslim world. She was Known as the "Uncompromising leader" for her fight against dictatorship and commitment to democracy. She married Ziaur Rahman in 1960, and was widowed in 1981 She was the first female prime minister of Bangladesh and the second female prime minister in the Muslim world after Benazir Bhutto. She is the widow of former president of Bangladesh and army commander, Ziaur Rahman. She had been the chairperson and leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) since 1984, which was founded by her husband in 1978 Khaleda Zia has two sons with her late husband, Ziaur Rahman: the elder son, Tarique Rahman, who is the acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) He returned to Bangladesh after 17 years of exile, and the younger son, Arafat Rahman "Koko", who passed away from a cardiac arrest in 2015.
