Fuel Shortage in Chennai: Public Rushes to Buy Induction Stoves Amid LPG CrisisDue to the ongoing fuel shortage, several areas in Chennai are facing a scarcity of cooking gas (LPG). As a result, many households and people staying in hostels or rented accommodations are facing significant difficulties.
Because LPG cylinders are not readily available, many residents have started purchasing induction stoves as an alternative for cooking. This sudden demand has led to induction stoves going out of stock on several online platforms. In particular, platforms such as Swiggy Instamart and Blinkit are reportedly showing induction stoves as out of stock.
As a result, customers are being forced to visit physical stores to purchase induction stoves. In Chennai, popular electrical markets such as Mount Road, T. Nagar, Purasawalkam, and Parrys Corner are witnessing a surge in demand for induction cooktops. Customers have also expressed concern that some shops are taking advantage of the situation by selling induction stoves at several times their usual price.
Chennai is home to a large number of students and working professionals from other states and even from abroad. Due to the shortage of cooking gas, these groups are also facing severe difficulties. Additionally, some small restaurants and eateries have temporarily shut down their operations.
Authorities have reportedly reiterated that domestic LPG cylinders should not be used for commercial purposes. Because of this regulation and the shortage of LPG, many small food establishments are unable to operate.
Meanwhile, auto drivers in Chennai who use LPG-powered vehicles are also severely affected. Due to the shortage of LPG, many drivers are unable to operate their autos regularly, leading to a loss of daily income. Auto drivers have expressed concern that the lack of adequate LPG supply is directly affecting their livelihoods.
At the same time, long queues of vehicles can be seen at several petrol stations across Chennai, with motorists waiting to fill petrol, diesel, and CNG. Many people are filling their tanks completely as a precaution, which has led to fuel shortages at some petrol stations.
Due to this increased demand, several petrol stations in the city have reportedly run out of petrol and diesel and have temporarily closed. As a result, many residents are struggling to obtain fuel even for essential travel needs.
The public and vehicle owners have urged authorities to take immediate steps to stabilize the fuel supply and address the ongoing crisis.
