Hyderabad: With Diwali just around the corner, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Food Safety Wing has stepped up its efforts to ensure food hygiene and safety during the festive rush. As part of a special drive, officials conducted surprise inspections at 43 sweet shops across Hyderabad on Tuesday. According to officials, the objective of the drive is to check the quality of sweets and food items being sold during the festive season and to ensure that proper hygiene practices are being followed at food establishments. Samples of various sweets and raw materials were lifted for laboratory analysis from different parts of the city. During the inspections, the GHMC teams noticed several common violations and issued notices to the erring shop owners. Violations Found: Lack of regular pest control measures Untested water being used for food preparation Broken and unhygienic kitchen floors, No medical fitness certificates for food-handling staff, Flies infestation in the food display area, Dirty ovens and unclean cooking spaces, Food handlers without gloves or hairnets, Open dustbins placed near food counters, Officials said that such conditions pose a risk to public health, especially during festive periods when sweet consumption increases significantly. A Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Food Safety official stated that the special inspection drive will continue in the coming days across all zones of Hyderabad to ensure food quality, hygiene, and safety for consumers. The department has also urged citizens to purchase sweets and snacks only from licensed and hygienic establishments.
