Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Conference leader Abdul Gani Vakil expressed serious concern over the alarming situation arising from the ongoing protests by nearly 70,000 daily wage workers across various regions of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. He stated that Jammu and Kashmir is presently witnessing a grave and deeply concerning situation, as these hardworking individuals—who form the backbone of essential public services—have taken to the streets against the prolonged neglect of their genuine and long-pending demands. For years, daily wage workers have rendered dedicated services in crucial departments such as the Power Development Department, Jal Shakti Department, Floriculture Department, Horticulture Department, and Irrigation and Flood Control Department. These departments rely heavily on their services to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply, safe drinking water, irrigation facilities, and maintenance of public infrastructure. Despite their long and sincere service, these workers continue to live under constant uncertainty without job security, regularization, or adequate financial benefits. The issue of pending wages has further pushed thousands of families into financial distress. Their patience, maintained over many years, has now given way to widespread protests reflecting frustration and despair. Vakil strongly urged the Government to take immediate and concrete steps towards: Regularization of long-serving daily wage employees Immediate release of all pending wages Framing of a transparent and time-bound regularization policy Ensuring dignity, security, and social protection for these workers He emphasized that continued inaction on such a critical humanitarian and administrative issue is unacceptable. These workers are not merely employees; they are the pillars sustaining essential services across Jammu and Kashmir. Ignoring their legitimate demands will only deepen unrest and disrupt public services. He further called upon the Government to initiate meaningful dialogue at the earliest and resolve the matter with seriousness and compassion, stating that the future of thousands of families depends upon a just and fair decision.
