Suleman Choudhary on Tuesday said that fruit-laden trucks will be allowed to proceed towards Jammu along the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway today at 11:00 AM. Choudhary said that heavy motor vehicles will be permitted to move towards Jammu, while light motor vehicles should take the Mughal Road. Meanwhile, in south Kashmir, thousands of apple boxes are lying ready for loading, but growers expressed concern that unless the highway is fully restored, their produce may continue to rot inside trucks and boxes. Fruit traders from outside the Valley also voiced alarm, saying they had never faced such disruption in their business history. “Our main priority is to clear fruit-laden trucks,” the IG Traffic said, adding that authorities expect to clear most of the stranded consignments today. He added that 2,800 trucks—mostly carrying fruit—had already passed through the Mughal Road on Monday and Tuesday. The ruling NC-led government has come under sharp criticism from fruit growers and opposition parties, including the Peoples Conference (PC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for failing to ensure smooth passage of fruit-laden trucks to markets across the country. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has also faced backlash for failing to widen and level a 300-metre stretch at Tahard in Udhampur district, where debris from landslides had buried the old highway. Officials said the poor condition of this patch continues to cause severe disruption to traffic. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, chaired a high-level meeting on Tuesday to review the situation along the Srinagar-Jammu highway.
