Ganderbal: In an effort to keep the age-old Ramadan tradition alive, two young Sher Khans—Javid Ahmed Bejard and Zahid Ahmed Chuhan from Turkpora Bandipora—are currently performing Sher Khani in Ganderbal during the holy month of Ramadan. The duo wakes up at around 3:00 AM every day and moves from village to village, beating a dole (drum) to wake residents for Sehri, the pre-dawn meal before the start of the daily fast. In an era where most people rely on mobile alarms and modern gadgets, the young men continue to follow this traditional practice, not only preserving Kashmiri cultural heritage but also helping people wake up in time for fasting. The duo said they have been receiving good support and appreciation from local residents for their efforts. Locals praised the initiative, saying that despite the availability of modern technology, it is heartening to see youth keeping the old tradition alive. “We used to see Sher Khani during our childhood days. Watching it again today brings back memories of those times,” local residents said. Kashmir's Ramadan drummers are not paid, but as the month nears its end, people tend to become generous. "We don’t ask for money. We get a lot of respect from people and the majority give us money and other gifts," Javid said. "We do it to earn heavenly rewards." Ramadan drummers are an important part of our tradition," said Bilal, a Resident in Bamloora area in Ganderbal . "They add to the festive atmosphere of the holy month."
