World Tuberculosis Day was observed in Kargil by the District Health Society Kargil on the theme “Yes! We Can End TB: Led by Bharat, Powered by Janbhagidari” at Suru Valley Higher Secondary School, Kargil. Deputy Commissioner Kargil, Rakesh Kumar, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Among others present were Chief Medical Officer Kargil, Dr. Liyaqat Ali Khan; District Tuberculosis Officer, Dr. Mohd Abass; Deputy CMO, Dr. Fatima Banoo; District Immunisation Officer, Dr. Rabia; BMO Kargil, Dr. Jaleel, Cluster Head JK bank, along with other officials, school management, and students. In his address, the Deputy Commissioner emphasized the role of students in spreading awareness about tuberculosis and addressing the social stigma associated with the disease. He urged them to act as ambassadors of awareness and encourage friends, family members, and the community to undergo testing in case of any symptoms. He highlighted that mass screening camps are being organized across Kargil to achieve the goal of eliminating TB from the district. He also expressed gratitude to J&K Bank and other contributors for their support in providing food baskets and logistical assistance to TB patients, and called for continued cooperation in the future. The District Tuberculosis Officer, Dr. Mohd Abass, spoke about tuberculosis, its associated stigma, and the progress made in controlling the disease. He elaborated on the objectives of the Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, the Ni-kshay Mitra engagement strategy, diagnostic protocols, and shared data on TB cases notified in Kargil over the past five years along with achievements. Chief Medical Officer Kargil, Dr. Liyaqat Ali Khan, also addressed the gathering and highlighted various preventive and treatment aspects related to tuberculosis. On the occasion, a speech competition was organized in which students actively participated, followed by the distribution of prizes among the winners. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by the School Vice Principal, Shazia Zaidi.
