Ganderbal, Sept 22: Walnut harvesting is underway in Ganderbal district, where the Gutlibagh area is especially famous for its walnut production. Most of the local population depends on walnut cultivation for their livelihood. Gutlibagh walnuts are renowned across the country, and large quantities are exported to different states every year. Farmers, however, say they face several challenges during the harvesting season. They expressed concern over the risk of falling from tall walnut trees, which are often 60 to 70 feet high. “Harvesting walnuts is a risky job. A fall from such a height can be fatal. We request the government to provide us with safety belts to protect us while working on the trees,” the farmers said. They further added that this year’s production has been low due to continuous rainfall. One farmer said, “Because of excessive rain, the yield is low. Cloudy weather has also created difficulties in drying the walnuts. We request the government to provide drying machines to help us in the process.” Despite the challenges, Gutlibagh walnuts continue to enjoy a strong reputation nationwide, but growers stress that government support is vital to ensure both farmer safety and sustainable production.
