Is this GPS spoofing 'cyber' attack on Delhi airport and other airports? Know the opinion of sources and experts.... Anchor:- A GPS spoofing incident occurred at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport between November 1 and 7 and similar incident are still happening on nation's different airports. This spoofing affected more than 800 flights. Sources have described it as "high-end military electronic warfare. Some cybersecurity expert have confirmed this. Sources described it as a "hostile attack by cyber terrorists." attack by cyber terrorists. The incident disrupted aircraft navigation systems within a 60-nautical mile radius, affecting more than hundred of flights. According to sources, unlike normal jamming, this operation may have broadcast fake satellite signals, causing the Flight Management System (FMS) to record incorrect data. According to sources GPS spoofing involves criminals creating a virtual air traffic control (ATC) tower and attempting to send fake satellite (GPS) signals. So, if you're flying a jet, you might be confused initially. You'll receive two different signals, but the fake satellite signals will trick the aircraft's navigation system into believing they're real and mislead you by showing incorrect flight data, location, weather, and runway data. This impacts arrivals and departures, leading to many flight cancellations. According to sources, cyberattacks in civil aviation are typically ransomware attacks, often aimed at stealing data from airlines and other organizations. If no ransom was paid, the question arises: which country is carrying out this attack against India. According to sources, the energy required to simultaneously simulate multiple aircraft within a 60 nanometer radius far exceeds the capabilities of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) SDS kits typically used by criminal groups. Attacks on this scale require technical skill and a large power supply. They are well trained. According to the sources such cyber terorists groups are paid for their services. If an enemy country wants to cause economic damage to another country, they hire them. It's like a hired service. These are entities like companies. "They target railways, shipping, oil tankers, etc. These groups look for vulnerabilities in cybersecurity and the supply chain of components and systems needed for aviation. Experts explains that some people turn on their mobile phones while traveling on airplanes. It's not as if this affects navigation. But if the phone isn't updated, it could be used to attack the plane. People need to be sensitive to this. Some cyber experts stated that the attack exploited infrastructure vulnerabilities, such as Runway 10/28, which had undergone upgrades on September 17th and was being tested in accordance with protocols. They stated that the automatic message switching systems that were targeted should be replaced immediately. They recommended not relying on satellite-based GPS systems from other countries. Satellite-based GPS systems have very low signal transmission power, increasing the risk of spoofing. Ground-based signals are more powerful. Although, given the potential for cyberattacks on the country's critical infrastructure, the government has implemented sophisticated cyberattack detection and investigation systems at airports, ports, and other important installations over the past ten years. But the challenge facing the country is that we are leasing or purchasing aircraft programmed for GPS from other countries. They further stated, "We must integrate all of this into our own navigation systems."
