AAP MP Vikramjit Sahney announces Rs 5 cr for Punjab flood relief Chandigarh (Punjab) [India], September 5 (ANI): Aam Aadmi Party''s (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP from Punjab Vikramjit Singh Sahney has committed Rs 5 crore towards Punjab flood relief, drawing from both his MPLAD funds and personal philanthropy, [India] press release said. Sahney announced that he is extending financial support to the State Disaster Relief Force for the procurement of advanced boats for flood rescue operations and modern machinery for river desilting. He further committed funds for the creation of robust flood protection bandhs and embankments to safeguard vulnerable areas from future calamities. Sahney also said that his NGO, Sun Foundation, is actively engaged in ground-level relief operations. With an expenditure of over Rs 1 crore so far, Sun Foundation has provided motorboats and ambulances while also distributing dry rations, medical kits, hygiene supplies, and Fodder for livestock to families severely affected by the floods, the press release said. MP Sahney stated that he will be providing Agri Inputs such as fertilisers, seeds, pesticides, etc. to the marginal farmers for sowing of wheat. He also demanded a Rs 10,000 crore flood relief package from the Centre. He proposed that each farmer be compensated Rs 50,000 per acre for crop loss, and that daily wage earners and livestock owners also receive adequate compensation. In addition to these funds, funds are required for infrastructure development as well, which has been damaged, the release said. Sharing an X post, he wrote, "I have committed Rs 5 Cr for flood relief & farmer support in Punjab -- from my MPLAD & Own funds Support to SDRF for Motorboats & desilting machinery. Bandhs/embankments for protection. Relief via Sun Foundation (boats, ambulances, rations, medical kits, Fodder). Agri inputs (fertilisers, seeds, pesticides) for marginal farmers. I urge the Centre to announce a Rs 10,000 Cr package -- with Rs 50,000/acre for crop loss compensation." The AAP MP also visited the flood-hit areas in Punjab on September 3. (ANI)

Himachal Pradesh government launches operation to evacuate devotees stranded during Manimahesh Yatra Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], September 4 (ANI): A major operation has been launched by the Chamba district administration to safely evacuate devotees stranded during the Manimahesh Yatra, under the direct supervision and directions of Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, stated [India] release. The Chamba administration on Thursday began transporting nearly 500 devotees from Bharmour to Chamba by vehicles. At certain stretches, where roads have been damaged, the district administration has deployed adequate security personnel to assist them and ensure their safety. In addition, free food, drinking water, transport and other essential facilities have been arranged en route to prevent any inconvenience to them. A Spokesperson of the state government informed today that, despite adverse weather conditions, 35 ailing and elderly devotees were safely airlifted to Chamba by a small helicopter, which completed seven sorties during the day. The Air Force''s MI-17 helicopter has also been stationed at Pathankot to meet any exigency. He further stated that Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi has been personally supervising the rescue operation on the ground for the past several days. Travelling on foot, he reached Bharmour from Chamba and has been tirelessly engaged in ensuring the safety of the devotees. He said that the state government was committed to safeguard the lives and property of its people as well as the visiting pilgrims and tourists from several parts. Meanwhile, the state has suffered the loss of 343 lives since the onset of this year''s monsoon on June 20, with 183 fatalities from rain-related incidents such as landslides, flash floods, and lightning strikes, and 160 deaths in road accidents, as per the State Disaster Management Authority. (SDMA) The SDMA''s cumulative report up to September 3 paints a grim picture of widespread human and economic loss across all 12 districts. "The monsoon this year has caused unprecedented disruption to life and property, with thousands affected directly and indirectly," an SDMA spokesperson said. (ANI)

Himachal Monsoon death toll climbs to 355 Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], September 4 (ANI): The ongoing monsoon havoc in Himachal Pradesh has claimed 355 lives since June, including 194 in rain-related incidents such as landslides and flash floods, and 161 in road accidents, according to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA). As of Thursday evening, 1,208 roads, including four national highways, remained blocked, 1,885 distribution transformers were disrupted, and 824 water supply schemes were hit across the state due to heavy rain-triggered damage, the SDMA''s daily public utility report said. "Field teams are working around the clock to restore connectivity, electricity, and drinking water supply in affected areas. However, recurring landslides and fresh slips are hampering operations in several districts," an SDMA spokesperson said. The highest road disruptions were reported from Mandi (287), Kullu (230), and Shimla (211) districts, with multiple stretches of NH-03, NH-05, NH-505, and NH-305 blocked. In the power sector, Kullu (999 transformers) and Shimla (259 transformers) suffered the worst outages. Water supply was badly affected in Shimla (348 schemes). Mandi (78 schemes). and Kullu (63 schemes). Officials said monsoon-triggered disasters have so far caused losses exceeding Rs 3,787 crores to public and private property this season, with road infrastructure, housing, and hydropower projects among the worst-hit sectors. The SDMA has urged people to avoid unnecessary travel in vulnerable hilly stretches and to stay alert to weather advisories issued by the IMD. Restoration works, it said, may take longer in high-altitude and landslide-prone regions. (ANI)
