India's Energy Supply Fully Secure; Government Calls Out Deliberate Misinformation Campaign The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas states that India's petroleum and LPG supply is fully secure and under control. All retail fuel outlets have enough supplies. There is no shortage of petrol, diesel, or LPG anywhere in the country. The Ministry urges citizens not to be misled by a deliberately mischievous, coordinated campaign of misinformation aimed at spreading unjustified panic. Petrol and Diesel: No Shortage, No Rationing India is an oasis of energy security. India is the world's 4th largest refiner and 5th largest exporter of petroleum products, supplying refined fuel to over 150 countries. Domestic petrol and diesel availability is structurally assured as India is a net exporter. Over 1 lakh retail fuel outlets across the country are open and dispensing fuel without interruption. No outlet has been asked to ration supply. While some countries are dealing with price increases, rationing, and emergency measures, India does not require such steps. Isolated instances of panic buying occurred at select pumps due to misinformation on social media, but fuel was dispensed to all consumers and depots continued operating overnight to ramp up supplies. Oil companies have also increased pump credit to over 3 days to prevent shortages due to working capital issues. Crude Oil Supply: Gap More Than Compensated Despite the Strait of Hormuz disruption, India is receiving more crude oil from 41-plus suppliers worldwide than before, with high volumes available in international markets, especially from the western hemisphere. Every Indian refinery is operating above 100% capacity. Crude oil supplies for the next 60 days have been secured. There is no supply gap. Strategic Reserves: The Complete and Accurate Picture Misinformation claims only 6 days of stocks exist; India has 74 days of total reserve capacity and about 60 days of stock cover currently (including crude, products, and strategic storage). Next 2 months of crude procurement are secured. LPG: Production Up, Import Requirement Down, Cargoes Secured LPG shortage is not present. Domestic refinery production has risen by 40%, reaching 50 TMT daily (over 60% of our requirement) against a total daily need of around 80 TMT. Net imports are down to about 30 TMT daily. About 800 TMT of assured LPG cargoes are en route from the United States, Russia, Australia, and others to 22 LPG import terminals. Roughly one full month of supply is arranged, with ongoing procurement. Oil companies are delivering over 50 lakh cylinders daily. Cylinder demand spiked to 89 lakh but has returned to 50 lakh; commercial cylinder allocations are set at 50% to prevent hoarding. PNG Promotion: A Transition Already Underway, Not a Crisis Response Piped Natural Gas (PNG) is being promoted in coordination with state governments as it is cheaper, cleaner, and safer for households. Domestic natural gas production is 92 MMSCMD out of a total daily requirement of 191 MMSCMD, reducing import dependence on LPG. City gas distribution has expanded from 57 areas in 2014 to over 300 today. Domestic PNG connections grew from 25 lakh to over 1.5 crore. This transition was underway before the current situation and reflects India's long-term energy strategy. The claim that PNG is being pushed due to LPG shortages is misinformation. LPG supply is secure. PNG offers a better, more affordable option for households. Government Warning: Action Against Misinformation The Ministry notes the circulation of misleading videos and posts that use images of queues and global footage of rationing to create a false impression of shortages. Some posts misrepresent government orders—such as the Natural Gas Control Order and the LPG Control Order—as emergency declarations, when they are standard instruments for supply prioritization. This misinformation is spread by miscreants and amplified by motivated elements, causing public anxiety. Citizens are urged to rely only on official government communications for information on fuel and gas availability. Spreading false information about essential commodity availability is an offense under applicable laws, and the government will act against those deliberately creating panic.
