The book, titled "In the Service of the Nation: Reflections of a Bureaucrat," authored by Mr. Pratap Singh, IRS, Director General of Investigation, Chennai, was formally launched today, December 12, 2025, at the Taj Connemara in Chennai. It was jointly released by two highly distinguished figures: Mr. Amitabh Kant, former G20 Sherpa and former CEO of NITI Aayog, Mr. M. K. Narayanan, former National Security Adviser and former Governor. This marks the third publication by Mr. Pratap Singh, and it provides a thoughtful account of his professional journey, offering deep insights into public administration, governance, and the functions of the Indian Revenue Service. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Amitabh Kant commended the author for recording his professional experiences, contributing to the institutional memory of the IRS. Mr. Kant underscored the vital importance of a robust taxation system in nation-building, stressing that achieving the vision of 'Vikshit Bharat by 2047' will require strong tax revenues to support investments in infrastructure, healthcare, and education. In his remarks, Mr. M. K. Narayanan praised Mr. Pratap Singh’s dedication to sharing his professional insights and appreciated his contributions to various social initiatives, including plantation drives and community outreach programs. The book's publisher, Mr. Shreesh Chandna of Oakbridge, highlighted the blend of professional reflection and pragmatic perspective present in the book. Author Mr. Pratap Singh stated that his primary motivation was to inspire young individuals, particularly those from rural backgrounds, to pursue ambitious goals and greater heights. He further elaborated on the "Gurgaon Model," which advocates for participative and inclusive taxation through enhanced engagement with taxpayers, industry, and the wider community. The book also carries a key message for young IRS officers: to remain patient, focused, and dedicated even when facing professional challenges.
