Ramban,
Anchor: Shia Muslims in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district took to the streets on Sunday to protest against the alleged killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in what were described as Israeli and U.S. strikes.
A large number of protesters assembled at Imambada Chanderkote, from where a peaceful protest rally was taken out. The procession passed through various areas along the old alignment of the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway (NHW-44) before culminating back at Imambada Chanderkote.
Raising emotionally charged slogans such as “Tum kitne Hosseini maroge… har ghar se Hosseini niklega” (How many Hosseinis will you kill? From every home, a Hosseini will rise), the demonstrators expressed grief and condemnation over the incident.
Protesters also burnt an effigy of U.S. President Donald Trump during the demonstrations.
Black flags, portraits of the late cleric, and banners supporting Iran were prominently displayed, while traditional mourning chants (Nauha) echoed through the streets.
Participants carried photographs of Ayatollah Khamenei, observing the protest in a disciplined and peaceful manner.
According to Iranian state media, Iran has announced 40 days of public mourning following the death of Ayatollah Khamenei. In Shia Islam, the 40th day after death, known as Arba’een, holds profound spiritual significance.
The death reportedly followed strikes by the United States and Israel under what has been described as Operation Epic Fury/Lion’s Roar. Iran’s Supreme Leader’s office has declared a period of national mourning, with flags flying at half-mast and public gatherings planned across the country, marking the end of a 37-year chapter in the Islamic Republic’s history.
Ayatollah Khamenei, who succeeded the founder of the Islamic Revolution Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989, was known for his unwavering stance against Western influence. Iranian authorities have reportedly heightened security, particularly in major cities such as Tehran, to prevent unrest and ensure public safety.
Meanwhile, attention has shifted to the process of selecting Khamenei’s successor, with widespread speculation over potential candidates and the possible implications for Iran’s future political and religious leadership.
