Beekeepers in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district are overjoyed after Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned Ramban’s famous Sulai Honey in Mann ki Baat. The recognition comes at a time when Sulai Honey has also secured the Geographical Indication, or GI Tag—boosting its global branding and economic prospects for hundreds of farmers. Ramban’s Sulai Honey, known for its rich medicinal properties and unique white-amber colour, has achieved a major milestone with the GI Tag certification. This tag protects its authenticity, prevents misuse by third parties, and gives authorised producers exclusive rights to use the name. According to the Apiculture Development Department, Sulai Honey has already been designated as the official product of Ramban under the One District One Product initiative. The rearing of Sulai Honey is primarily carried out in the higher reaches of Shetaani Nallah in Banihal. Officials say GI tagging had not only help promote Sulai Honey internationally but has also significantly enhance the income of local beekeepers. The district is considered a major hub of apiculture, with over 500 beekeepers directly involved and more than 35,500 colonies of Apis mellifera. Additionally, around 8,500 colonies of Apis cerana are being reared traditionally, providing livelihood support to over 1,200 farmers. Ramban district produces around 6000 quintals of honey annually, supported by rich flora including Acacia, Mustard, Multiflora, and especially Plecranthus rugosus — locally known as Sulai. This shrub, widely used in traditional medicine, contributes to the unique flavour and organic purity of Sulai Honey. Beekeepers say PM Modi’s mention has boosted their morale and increased market visibility, with farmers now expecting 3–4 times better prices for their produce. Farooq Ahmed Wani, President, Beekeepers Association Ramban said that “We are very thankful to the Prime Minister for recognising our hard work. His mention of Sulai Honey in Mann ki Baat has encouraged us greatly. We also thank the government for granting the GI Tag, which we had been waiting for many years.” Officer, Apiculture Development Department, Ramban said “Sulai Honey is a unique product of the Ramban. With the GI Tag, its authenticity is protected, and it will help boost exports and income for our farmers. The government is taking keen interest in beekeeping, which will double farmers’ earnings in the coming years.”
