Sopore MLA Irshad Rasool Kar has assured that concrete measures are being taken to address the long-pending drinking water shortage in the constituency, a problem that has persisted for over four decades. Speaking about the ongoing efforts, Kar said that under the AMRUT Scheme, a major project is in progress to improve the water supply by tapping into the Jhelum River and constructing Overhead Tanks (OHTs). The initiative, once completed, is expected to significantly ease the water crisis in the long run. He further informed that a ₹70 crore project has been proposed for Sopore to provide a sustainable solution to the issue. The project includes finalizing tenders and implementing emergency measures to upgrade the pipeline and power supply infrastructure. Kar added that both schemes are expected to take two to three years for completion, after which Sopore residents are likely to get major relief from the decades-old water scarcity problem.
