ANCHOR :The University of Jammu’s Bhaderwah Campus has hosted an international conference focusing on cryosphere changes and their impact on ecosystem services and sustainable development in the Himalayan region. VO1:The Bhaderwah Campus of the University of Jammu turned into a global knowledge hub as the Department of Earth Sciences, Institute of Mountain Environment, organized the 3rd International Conference on Cryosphere Change and Sustainable Development.
VO2:The conference brought leading researchers, academicians and policymakers under one roof to discuss the alarming changes taking place in the Himalayan cryosphere and their impact on community livelihoods, environment, and long-term ecological stability.
On the occasion MLA Bhaderwah Dalip Parihar was the Chief Guest.
Daleep Singh Parihar, MLA Bhaderwah said, “This conference highlights the significance of climate resilience, and the government is committed to supporting scientific and community-driven initiatives.”
VO3:Rector Bhaderwah Campus, Prof. Rahul Gupta, delivered the welcome address, emphasizing the need to blend scientific research with indigenous knowledge systems for sustainable solutions.
Conference Convener, Dr. Chhering Tandup, outlined the objectives of the conference, while keynote speaker Prof. Sachidanand Sinha detailed climate variability and glacial responses affecting ecosystems and communities.
Dr. Chhering Tandup said, “The Himalayan cryosphere is crucial for ecological balance. Collaborative research is the need of the hour.”
VO4:The event also witnessed the release of the Abstract Book—an important academic contribution consolidating research from across the Himalayan region.
Guest of Honour, Padma Shrre awardee Chewang Phunsog, highlighted the role of local wisdom and community participation in climate adaptation models.
Padma Shree Awardee Chewang Phunsog (IAS) said, “Indigenous knowledge holds key solutions for sustainable mountain development.”
VO5:Conference Convener, Dr. Chhering Tandup, outlined the objectives of the conference, while keynote speaker Prof. Sachidanand Sinha detailed climate variability and glacial responses affecting ecosystems and communities.
A special presentation of mementos honoured the dignitaries for their contribution.
With climate change accelerating faster than predicted, discussions like these become crucial for the Himalayan region. Experts say integrating science with community-driven conservation is the way forward.
Students from different educational institutions from District Doda also participated in the International Conference and expressed their gratitude to the Bhaderwah Campus for providing them a great opportunity to learn from the experts.
VO6 :The proceedings concluded with a formal Vote of Thanks by Dr. Shayan Javeed, followed by the National Anthem, marking the end of the two-day global academic gathering.
