Amid the ongoing holy month of Ramzan, traditional drummers known as Sehar Khans continue to keep a centuries-old tradition alive in Bhaderwah Valley by waking people up for Sehri, the pre-dawn meal before the start of the daily fast. In the pitch-dark early hours, when streets remain deserted and most residents are still asleep, Manzoor Ahmed Shaksaaz and his group move through the narrow lanes of the town, breaking the silence of the night with rhythmic drumbeats and loud chants of “Waqt-e-Sahar” (time for dawn). Their resonating calls echo across residential areas, reminding people that the time for Sehri has arrived. Along with beating drums, the group also recites Naats (devotional hymns) and traditional couplets, turning their nightly walk into a spiritual experience for the residents observing the fast during the holy month of Ramzan. Locals say the tradition of Sehar Khans dates back to the early arrival of Islam in the region and has been preserved for generations in Bhaderwah. Despite the widespread use of modern gadgets such as mobile phones, digital alarms and loudspeakers, many residents in Bhaderwah still consider the Sehar Khans the most reliable and heartfelt way to wake up for Sehri. The drummers begin their daily journey as early as 3:00 am, not merely beating drums but also singing devotional verses and Shruiks (couplets) of Sheikh Noor-ud-din Noorani. Starting from the shrine of Shrine of Syed Zain-ul-Abidin in Qilla Mohalla, Manzoor Ahmed Shaksaaz and his companions walk nearly three kilometres every morning, passing through Jullai Mohalla, Pasri, Khateeb Mohalla, Masjid Mohalla and finally reaching Butt Mohalla on Chamba Road. Through their dedication and devotion, the Sehar Khans continue to preserve a unique cultural and religious tradition, ensuring that the spirit of Ramzan remains deeply rooted in the community life of Bhaderwah.
