As the holy month of Ramadan progresses, the demand for traditional Kashmiri roti has surged across the Valley. From bustling markets to small neighborhood bakeries, people are lining up to buy various types of these delicacies for Suhoor and Iftar. Traditional Kashmiri bakery items are prepared in a special tandoor fueled by firewood. This year, there has been a significant rise in demand for popular rotis such as Chulcha, Roath, Afghani Roti, Bagerkhani, and Makai Roti. Kashmiri bakers emphasize their commitment to providing hygienic and high-quality products to customers despite the challenges they face. Bakers Struggle Amid Rising Flour Prices. Speaking about the hardships of their work, a local baker said, "It is very difficult to work in front of high flames, but we do it so that the people of Kashmir do not face any difficulties during Suhoor and Iftar." However, many bakers are concerned about the rising prices of flour in the market. They have appealed to the government to provide relief to traditional Kashmiri bakers so they can continue their trade without financial strain. Renowned traditional baker Mushtaq Ahmad from Ganderbal highlighted the growing demand during Ramadan. “During this holy month, there is a significant rise in demand for traditional Kashmiri rotis. Our goal is to provide hygienic and high-quality products to our customers,” he said. To cater to the rising demand, bakers have increased production. Mushtaq Ahmad also emphasized the cultural and religious significance of these baked goods, stating that they remain an essential part of Ramadan meals in Kashmiri households.
