PDP Slams Sakina Itoo’s Remarks on Private Teachers, Urges Unity in Education Sector Srinagar, March 17: The Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday strongly criticized Education Minister Sakina Itoo over her recent remarks regarding the qualifications of private school teachers, terming them “unfortunate” and “divisive.” In a statement, PDP spokesperson Syed Tajamul expressed deep concern, stating that such comments undermine the contribution of thousands of private school teachers who continue to serve under challenging conditions. “Private school teachers, despite working on modest salaries and with limited resources, have played a significant and commendable role in sustaining and advancing education in Jammu and Kashmir. Much of the progress visible in the sector can be attributed to their dedication and perseverance,” he said. Tajamul emphasized that the teaching profession should not be fragmented along institutional lines. “Teachers, whether in government or private institutions, share the same responsibility of nurturing young minds. Drawing comparisons or creating divisions only sends a negative message to students and society at large,” he added. He also raised a critical question regarding public perception and institutional trust. “If private school teachers are perceived to be less qualified, why do many government employees, including teachers, choose private schools for their children? This contradiction reflects the ground realities and the confidence people repose in these institutions,” he remarked. Highlighting the larger issue of unemployment, Tajamul noted that the region is not short of qualified individuals but lacks adequate opportunities. “Across Kashmir, one can find highly educated youth struggling to secure appropriate employment. Postgraduates working as drivers, B.Ed. holders in unrelated professions, and graduates in low-paying jobs are no longer exceptions but a concerning norm,” he said. He urged public representatives to exercise responsibility and sensitivity in their statements, particularly on matters concerning education. “While constructive criticism is essential in a democratic society, remarks that appear dismissive of any section only weaken the collective effort to improve the system,” he said. The PDP reiterated that both government and private educators are integral to the region’s educational framework and called for a more inclusive and respectful approach to addressing challenges in the sector.
