Noida, Uttar Pradesh:Himachal: Hindu orgs request Muslims to avoid Friday prayers at disputed Sanjauli mosque Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, December 5: Amid the dispute over the Sanjauli mosque structure in Shimla, Hindu organisations have appealed to the Muslim community to refrain from offering Friday prayers inside the controversial mosque building until the matter is settled in court. They cited the Himachal Pradesh High Court's directive to maintain the status quo and the earlier Municipal Commissioner's order regarding demolition of the top floors of the building. Narender Thakur, from Devbhoomi Sangharsh Samiti, said they respect the court's order and expect the decision scheduled for March 9 to uphold the lower court's ruling, which ordered the demolition of three upper floors of the mosque structure. He further appealed to the local Muslim community to maintain communal harmony by not entering the unauthorised structure for prayers until a final legal resolution is reached. Meanwhile, Vijay Sharma, Convenor of the organisation, reiterated that the High Court's status quo order must not be interpreted as permission to use the disputed section of the building for prayers. He urged the Muslim community to avoid any move that might escalate tensions and insisted that both communities should respect the judicial process. On the other hand, Sanjauli Mosque Committee Chairman, Lateef Negi, stated that the land belongs to the Waqf Board and the illegality pertains only to the additional construction. He assured that they would comply with the court order and remove one more floor soon, while asserting that Friday prayers should continue peacefully as before. Negi also appealed to all groups to maintain peace and abide by the court's directive until the case is fully resolved. Tension around the mosque has continued in recent weeks, but local leaders from both communities have expressed hope that harmony will be preserved while the legal proceedings continue.

Noida, Uttar Pradesh:New Delhi [India], December 4 (ANI): External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday informed the Rajya Sabha that 73-year-old Indian citizen Harjit Kaur was maltreated while in US detention before being deported, and the Indian government has taken up the issue strongly with the American embassy following her arrival in the country. Speaking during the question hour in the upper house, the EAM stated that immigration officials of the Indian government routinely interview all deportees upon arrival. In this case, Jaishankar said that the immigration officer clarified that Kaur had not been handcuffed, contrary to some claims. However, he confirmed that she had been maltreated during her detention in the US before she was put on the flight to India. "Whenever any flight with deportees comes, the deportees are invariably interviewed by the officials of the Government of India. In this particular case, our immigration officer said that she was not cuffed," Jaishankar said. "While Harjit Kaur (deportee) was not handcuffed, she was maltreated in detention before she was put on the flight. We raised the matter of her maltreatment strongly with the American Embassy and asked the American authorities to look into it," he added. Harjit Kaur, a 73-year-old Sikh woman who had spent three decades in the United States, was deported by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to India in September. Kaur, who had unsuccessfully applied for asylum in the US, was arrested by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials on September 8. She moved to California in 1991 with her two young sons and lived and worked there while making several unsuccessful asylum attempts in the US. She was moved to a holding facility in Georgia on September 19 and deported to India on September 22, never getting to visit her US home or bid a proper farewell to family and friends. She spent 60-70 hours in detention without a bed, forced to sleep on the floor despite double knee replacements. She was given ice to take medication and denied food she could eat, with guards blaming her for her inability to eat the provided sandwich. Harjit Kaur has filed multiple appeals, all the way up to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and has lost each time

Noida, Uttar Pradesh:Only 37 out of 1817 Hindu temples and Sikh gurdwaras operational: Report reveals state apathy in Pakistan Islamabad December 4 A recent report presented before the Parliamentary Committee on Minority Caucus has revealed that out of 1,817 Hindu temples and Sikh gurdwaras across Pakistan, only 37 remain operational. The data highlights grim reality: centuries-old places of worship are worsening due to poor government maintenance and the dwindling population of Hindu and Sikh communities, as reported by Dawn. According to Dawn, during the committee's maiden session, Convener Senator Danesh Kumar pledged that the caucus would strive to turn constitutional promises of minority protection into tangible actions. He asserted that Pakistan's minorities deserved "practical implementation of constitutional guarantees," calling for immediate policy reforms to ensure justice and equality. Speaking at the meeting, Dr Ramesh Kumar Vankwani strongly criticised the Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) for its failure to care for temples and gurdwaras that fall under its jurisdiction. Vankwani demanded that the ETPB's leadership be handed over to a non-Muslim, arguing that only then could the restoration of neglected religious properties be handled with sincerity. The committee also recommended urgent steps to protect these heritage sites, which represent not only religious significance but also Pakistan's multicultural past. MNA Kesoo Mal Kheal Das noted that most of the temples and gurdwaras were abandoned after the 1947 Partition, as local Hindu and Sikh communities migrated to India. However, he maintained that the government must still preserve these structures as cultural landmarks and open them for pilgrims from within and outside Pakistan, as highlighted by Dawn. The caucus further discussed reforms in the education sector, suggesting the removal of hate content from school curricula, the introduction of scholarships for minority students, and an equivalent of the 20-mark Hifz-i-Quran quota for non-Muslim learners. Members also demanded increased job quotas for minorities and insisted that senior bureaucrats attend future caucus meetings to ensure accountability. The committee unanimously adopted its Terms of Reference and reaffirmed its resolve to uphold Pakistan's constitutional ideals of equality, religious harmony, and social justice principles still awaiting true enforcement, as reported by Dawn.

Noida, Uttar Pradesh:US cuts work permit duration, impacting thousands of Indian workers Washington, In a move that will significantly affect hundreds of thousands of Indian professionals and families navigating the US immigration system, US Citizenship and Immigration Services announced sweeping reductions to the maximum validity of Employment Authorisation Documents, saying the shift is necessary to strengthen security vetting and detect potential risks among those working in the United States. USCIS said the revised policy will “result in more frequent vetting of aliens who apply for authorization to work in the United States.” enabling the agency to “deter fraud and detect aliens with potentially harmful intent so they can be processed for removal from the United States.” Director Joseph Edlow tied the decision to public-safety concerns. “Reducing the maximum validity period for employment authorization will ensure that those seeking to work in the United States do not threaten public safety or promote harmful anti-American ideologies,” he said. Citing a recent attack involving service members in Washington, he added: “After the attack on National Guard service members in our nation''s capital by an alien who was admitted into this country by the previous administration, it''s even more clear that USCIS must conduct frequent vetting of aliens.” The changes directly affect several categories heavily used by Indian nationals — including employment-based green card applicants and H-1B workers with pending adjustment of status cases. Under the new guidance, EADs issued to refugees, asylees, individuals granted withholding of removal, applicants with pending asylum or withholding claims, and those applying for adjustment under INA 245 will now be valid for 18 months instead of five years. The Policy Alert states the rule applies to all applications “pending or filed on or after December 5, 2025.” Parallel restrictions mandated by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (H.R. 1) impose even tighter limits on those paroled into the United States, individuals granted Temporary Protected Status, those with pending TPS applications, and spouses of entrepreneur parolees. Their work permits will be capped at one year or the end of the underlying parole or TPS period, whichever is shorter. These rules apply to all Forms I-765 “pending or filed on or after July 22, 2025.” The Federal Register notice detailing these changes also outlines new statutory fees — including $550 for specific initial applications and $275 for renewals — which USCIS cannot waive under H.R. 1. Most of the revenue flows to the US Treasury, with USCIS retaining a smaller share to support operations. For Indian applicants caught in decades-long green card backlogs, the changes could create new uncertainty. Many rely on long-duration EAD and Advance Parole documents to remain employed while awaiting permanent residency, often for years. Immigration attorney Emily Neumann warned that the shortened validity periods will intensify pressure on processing pipelines. “Employment-based I-485 applicants will now see EADs issued for 18 months instead of 5 years, effective December 5, 2025,” she said. “This likely means the same for Advance Paroles. It would not be a big deal if renewals were processed timely. Unfortunately, it just creates more filings, which increases the backlog of cases, which increases processing times. This, coupled with the elimination of the automatic EAD renewal for pending applications, will just cause people to have to stop work for no good reason.” USCIS said the changes are needed to “enhance its screening and vetting efforts, enable detection of aliens with potentially harmful intent, deter fraud, and place removable aliens into proceedings,” adding that the update “rescinds aspects of USCIS'' guidance of September 27, 2023” to ensure more frequent reviews. The Indian diaspora — one of the largest beneficiaries of employment-based visas — is expected to be among the most affected communities. Many depend on uninterrupted work authorization to maintain jobs in technology, healthcare, academia, and research while awaiting green card availability, a process slowed by per-country caps. USCIS backlogs have surged in recent years as applications for asylum, parole, TPS, and adjustment of status have risen sharply. The latest changes are expected to add new volume to the system, even as the agency continues efforts to modernize processing. The new limits take effect December 5 for the 18-month categories and July 22 for the H.R. 1-mandated one-year documents, covering both pending and newly filed work-permit applications.
