Instead of turning today’s specially convened session of the Legislative Assembly into a mere formality, the Bhagwant Mann government should extend it as a winter session for at least one week, so that serious discussions can be held on all the pressing issues related to Punjab. Focusing only on the MGNREGA law is not sufficient. The Bhagwant Mann government should also clearly and formally present its stand in the Legislative Assembly on the Electricity Amendment Bill, the Seed Bill, and the Labour Codes being imposed by the Central Government. Crucial issues like electricity and seeds fall under the jurisdiction of the states as per the Constitution. Any attempt by the Central Government to forcibly impose laws on these subjects is a direct attack on the federal structure. What is even more worrying is that when the Central Government sought the Punjab Government’s position on these bills, the silence of the Bhagwant Mann government clearly indicates—if not a conspiracy—then what else could it be, but tacit support for these anti-Punjab bills?
