The BJP-led Central Government’s unilateral decision to dissolve the 59-year-old Senate and Syndicate of Panjab University through a mere notification is nothing short of unconstitutional overreach. How can the Centre alter the University’s democratic set-up without consulting the Punjab Government, when the existing Senate structure was duly endorsed by the Punjab Vidhan Sabha under the Panjab University Act of 1947, This brazen act is not reform, it is subversion. The Centre can, at best, intervene temporarily in administrative matters, but to dismantle a democratically constituted body by executive fiat is an affront to federalism, academic freedom, and the spirit of cooperative governance. Panjab University is the intellectual and emotional heritage of Punjab, not a political playground for centralised control. This move exposes the BJP’s ulterior design to systematically snatch Punjab’s institutions and erode its constitutional rights. Such undemocratic and unconstitutional acts will be resisted with every democratic means possible. Punjab’s voice cannot and will not be silenced.
