Mirik: No tourists in Mirik, people are sad. Government is urged to rebuild the Dhudia Bridge or construct an alternative route to connect Siliguri. Mirik, a favorite destination near plains, used to be crowded till Saturday with tourists mostly from Kolkata; on Sunday a major incident occurred in the Darjeeling hills affecting Mirik Sub Division. Many landslides and loss of life were reported. The Dhudia Bridge from Siliguri has collapsed due to the heavy flow of water. Since last Sunday Mirik is not connected. The alternative road via Panighatta via Tinling is not suitable for travel; only emergency vehicles can use it. Mirik Jil, a main tourist attraction, is empty and looks like a strike. Tourists, locals, and vehicles used to be active there, but since Sunday it is quiet. Those in Mirik were rescued to safe places in Siliguri by locals. Mirik's economy depends on tourism—drivers, hotels, homestays, restaurants, brokers—but since Sunday they are in sadness. The public requests both state and central governments to rebuild the Dhudia Bridge as soon as possible or construct an alternative road so tourists and locals can move toward Siliguri and beyond.
