Srinagar, November 1: A media interaction was held today at the Board Room of Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Srinagar, as part of the Research Dissemination Meet to share key research insights from the ICMR PCOS Task Force Study Results. The session was chaired by Prof. M. Ashraf Ganie, Director, SKIMS / EOSG, and National Chief Coordinator & Principal Investigator of the ICMR PCOS Task Force. Prof. Ganie interacted with media representatives, highlighting the major findings and implications of the multi-centric study on Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) conducted under the aegis of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). The interaction aimed to disseminate scientific outcomes, raise awareness, and promote evidence-based understanding of PCOS among healthcare professionals and the general public. SKIMS has launched a new initiative to regularly share research findings with the public. As part of this feature, every month, a department or faculty member will present their research in a media interaction, making scientific work more accessible to the community. The first phase results of the ICMR-supported study on Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) were shared today. The study reveals that PCOS affects every fourth to fifth woman in India, leading to menstrual irregularities, excessive hair growth, and an increased risk of conditions such as fatty liver, sleep disorders, psychiatric issues, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and certain cancers. Prof. Ganie emphasized the need for greater awareness about PCOS, especially among young and school-going girls, so that early screening and lifestyle modifications can help prevent long-term complications. He stressed that early detection and timely intervention are crucial for managing PCOS effectively and improving women’s health outcomes.
